The MagSafe Phone Case Guide
Choosing between a standard custom case and a MagSafe-compatible one comes down to how you charge, mount and carry your phone. Here is how the two compare on a personalised YoCaes case — and how to pick the right one for your iPhone or Galaxy.
What MagSafe actually does
MagSafe is a ring of magnets built into every iPhone from the iPhone 12 onwards. A MagSafe phone case carries a matching magnet array inside the shell, so the magnetic field passes through the case at full strength. That single detail changes three things: wireless charging aligns perfectly and runs at up to 25W, magnetic wallets and car mounts snap on and stay on, and accessories such as magnetic power banks sit flush instead of sliding.
Without those magnets, a case still allows wireless charging — but the phone falls back to standard Qi at roughly 7.5W, and any misalignment means slow charging or none at all.

How to choose the right MagSafe case for your design
- 1. Start with your charging habit. Daily wireless charging or a car mount makes MagSafe worth the extra millimetre. Cable charging every night does not.
- 2. Check magnet strength, not just compatibility. "Magnetic" cases with a thin ring hold a wallet but drop it over speed bumps. Look for a full N52 array rated above 1,200g of pull force.
- 3. Confirm the exact model. Camera housings changed on every iPhone generation, and a MagSafe ring positioned for an iPhone 14 sits off-centre on an iPhone 17 Pro Max. Every YoCaes template is cut to the individual model.
- 4. Keep artwork off the dead centre if it matters. The magnets never show through our print layer, but a magnetic wallet will cover the middle third of the back while attached. Faces and initials read better placed high.
- 5. Match the finish. Matte finishes hide the slight extra thickness of a magnetic shell; high gloss makes printed colour pop. Both take the same UV ink.
Which iPhones and Galaxy phones support it
Every iPhone from the iPhone 12 through to the iPhone 17 Pro Max has native MagSafe. Samsung Galaxy S25 and S26 models support Qi2 magnetic charging, and older Galaxy S21 to S24 phones can still use magnetic accessories through a magnet-equipped case, though charging speed follows the phone's own wireless limit.

Do I need a MagSafe phone case for my iPhone?
If you use a magnetic wallet, car mount, power bank or a MagSafe charger, a MagSafe-compatible case keeps the magnetic connection strong through the case. If you charge with a cable and never use magnetic accessories, a standard custom case is thinner, lighter and slightly cheaper.
Does a MagSafe case charge faster than a standard case?
On a MagSafe charger, yes. The built-in magnet ring aligns the coils perfectly, so a MagSafe iPhone can draw up to 25W. A standard case forces the phone to fall back to slower, misalignment-prone Qi charging at around 7.5W.
Will the magnets show through my custom printed design?
No. At YoCaes the magnet array sits behind the print layer inside the case shell, so your artwork prints edge to edge with no visible ring or shadow.
Do MagSafe cases work with Samsung Galaxy phones?
